On the day this photograph was taken, with the roofing complete and the last of the scaffolding almost removed, Van Alen filed a $725,000 lien on the Chrysler Building for the balance of his fee. Although no contact had been signed between architect and client (Chrysler had taken over the leasehold on the project from a previous owner), the courts prevailed in Van Alen's favor, handing down its largest judgement to that date. The fee for preparing plans, drawings, and specifications for the building and for closely supervising its construction was calculated at six percent of the total $14 million building cost--a bargain compared to the ten percent demanded by other architects of the period.
